Let’s face it. Eyelash extensions are brilliant. As the trend grows, and rightfully so, numerous lash stylists have emerged. Although the application procedure seems simple for the intrigued future stylist, one quickly realizes it’s a delicate and intricate process. It’s labor intensive and requires much attention and care.
If the eyelash extensions are applied correctly the results are breathtaking and indefinite. If the extensions are applied incorrectly, if they are stuck together for example, this will damage natural lashes. Whether it’s too much adhesive being used or lack of precision and knowledge, when lashes are stuck together this will disrupt the natural growth cycle, causing natural lashes to fall out, leaving undesired gaps. The client’s lashes will appear sparse. This creates a viscous cycle where the avid lash wearer will continue to chase that beautiful and bold first set, yet never being able to achieve that look, simply because their natural lashes have fallen out. This can go on and on without the client’s awareness. Over long periods of time, the lash eventually stops regenerating. Yes, a bald spot.
When people ask me (and they do all the time) are eyelash extensions harmful? My direct answer is yes, only if they are done incorrectly. A great rule to keep in mind, “you get what you pay for.”
Stylists that invest much time and money into their education yield better results. There is however always an exception to this rule. I’ve known stylist who were self taught that do amazing work. I know stylists who have never picked up tweezers and within days can apply full sets in 2 hours. Very few were perfect, but mostly acceptable.
Experience is the ultimate knowledge. Of course the longer the stylist has been lashing, the more experience they have, the better the results. It’s not only about being able to apply them. One has to apply them so they look harmonious with the individual. I see too many girls walking around with porcupines sticking out of their eyes. No judgement, gotta love the extremists out there.
In the end, whether you’re searching for a good deal or you just found a place or person you vibe with, by all means go for it. But pay attention to your natural lashes and eyes. If they are bothering you, if they feel heavy or pokey, if they feel like they’re adhered to your eyelids or uncomfortable in any way, it’s best to get them professionally removed. Pay attention to the appearance of your natural lashes. If they seem sparse, seek professional advice.
